Getting the heater size right is one of the most important decisions in any sauna build. Too small and your room never reaches temperature. Too large and you're wasting power and stressing the element unnecessarily. This guide walks through how Narvi calculate heater sizing, and what adjusts the number up or down.

The Starting Point: 1 kW Per Cubic Metre

The standard rule for sizing an electric sauna heater is 1 kW of output per cubic metre of room volume.

To get your room volume, multiply the internal length x width x ceiling height.

A 2m x 2m sauna with a 2.1m ceiling = 8.4m³, so a 6–9 kW heater is the right range. A 2m x 3m sauna with a 2.1m ceiling = 12.6m³, so a 9–12 kW heater is more appropriate.

That's the starting point. But a well-insulated timber room with no glass behaves very differently from one with a concrete floor, a glass door, or an open porch. Those variables adjust the calculation.

Adjusting for Non-Insulated Surfaces

Every square metre of non-insulated surface. Glass, brick, tile, or concrete, adds 1.5m³ to your calculated room volume. That extra volume is then converted to kW at the same 1:1 ratio. This is the standard method used by Finnish heater manufacturers.

In practice for most NZ sauna builds:

A standard insulated glass door is roughly 1.2m² of glass. That adds 1.8m³ to your calculated volume, meaning you'll need approximately 1–2 kW more than the base room volume alone would suggest.

A sauna with additional glass panels, a glass wall section, or an uninsulated concrete floor will need more again. Add 1.5m³ per square metre of each non-insulated surface and recalculate from there.

Glass loses heat significantly faster than a properly insulated timber wall. The 1.5m³ per m² adjustment is well-established across Finnish heater specifications and accounts for that heat loss.

Other Variables Worth Knowing.

Insulation quality

This is the biggest single variable. Mineral wool insulation packed tight with a foil vapour barrier holds heat efficiently and lets you stay at the lower end of the kW range for your volume. A poorly insulated room loses heat faster than the heater can produce it. If you're retrofitting into an existing space with minimal insulation, size up.

Ceiling height

The sweet spot is 2.1–2.2m. Higher than 2.2m and you're heating extra air above the bench level that doesn't benefit the experience. Include the actual ceiling height in your volume calculation.

Outdoor temperature

An outdoor sauna in a NZ winter, particularly in the South Island or exposed coastal locations, is working against lower ambient temperatures. If your sauna is an outdoor build with exterior walls exposed to cold air, size for slightly more capacity than the calculated volume alone suggests.

These are base figures for a well-insulated timber room. Add 1.5m³ per m² of any non-insulated surface before converting to kW.

A Bigger Heater Isn't Always Better

This is worth understanding before you buy.

An oversized heater in a small room reaches temperature quickly and cuts out before the stones are deeply heated. Löyly quality suffers as a result, the stones haven't had long enough to store proper heat, so the steam is sharp rather than soft and sustained.

A correctly sized heater runs continuously through heat-up, bringing the stones to full temperature before the thermostat cuts in. That's what produces good löyly.

If you're between sizes, sizing up slightly is fine. Jumping two brackets is not.

Electric vs Wood-Burning. Does Sizing Work Differently?

The volume calculation applies to both, but wood-burning heaters are sized by the room volume range they're designed for rather than a straight kW figure. Every wood-burning stove specifies a minimum and maximum room volume. Check your calculated volume (including glass adjustments) sits comfortably within that range, not at the edge of it.
